Implementing Award Winning Standards

Set up to honour the work of individuals who promote the use and understanding of ISO standards, the first ISO Prize was recently awarded to Hulda Oliveira Giesbrecht, in recognition of her work with small businesses in Brazil. The ISO Prize is designed for people who do not work directly in ISO, a member body or a technical committee, yet help promote the use of standards via their own projects and work. The importance of opening up the world of standards was under discussion at this year’s ISO General Assembly in St Petersburg. Objectives include helping small businesses to compete effectively, encouraging entrepreneurship and strengthening national economies. Hulda’s work has encompassed looking at the challenges facing small enterprises who wish to implement ISO standards – including ISO 22000. Working with hotels, bars and restaurants she and her team have identified ways to make the standard increasingly more accessible. Hulda will utilise part of her award to finance a future project for MSEs, hoping to research similar initiatives in other countries, establishing guidance to encourage and support small businesses with the development and use of standards.
