Fines from £50,000 for Losing Data!

As from the 6th April 2010, The Information Commissioner’s Office has been granted the power to fine companies who negligently lose data which results in a breach of the Data Protection Act.

The new power comes after several cases of careless data loss from government and large companies over the past two years. Malcom Marshall, KPMG’s UK head of information protection services stated “Today marks a milestone in UK privacy regulation. It comes as a result of the regulator lobbying hard for more power in the light of a series of high profile breaches”.

KPMG, provider of professional services, has issued some suggestions to avoid a data breach fine including advice on loss of a computer and trusting suppliers with your data.
